Sportsball Is Happening! And I Need Your Monitor Recos 🏈

Published 3 months ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader,

Now that we've got two football teams traveling to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl, ...

Do not use the words "Super Bowl."

Ever since I started work in social media (2008), I've had to look this stuff up or ask my colleagues if they looked it up already. You are not allowed to use "Super Bowl" - it is trademarked by the NFL. You can use it in a conversation, but social media? No, it's marketing and only the NFL has the rights for that.

It is fine to use the term SUPER BOWL® in news stories about the game and in conversations about the game. There is a trademark concept called “nominative fair use” that allows others to use a trademarked term when there is simply no better way to refer to it. However and most importantly, that concept does not extend to commercial use of the term.

Thank you, Karen, for referencing this for us!

Here are some of alternative phrases:

  1. Guy-lentine's Day
  2. "Best time to go to Costco/the mall" (after the first quarter)
  3. Manicure Time!
  4. Sportsball Championship
  5. Opener for Usher
  6. Pre-show for Usher's mini concert
  7. Taylor Swift's boyfriend's game day
  8. Sunday
  9. The day after Lunar New Year
  10. Sunday in Las Vegas
  11. Shiny Pants Championship Game
  12. Red Team vs Red Team Day

You can still use "the big game" in marketing. That's all I can remember from my days of having to incorporate Super Bowl Sunday.

Do you really need to do this?

Does your business have to marry your product/service to Feb 11? I think it would be fun to use some of the current events or be a little kitschy, but you definitely do not need to use "Super Bowl" in the messaging.

Even if you owned a bowling alley or sold big bowls, I'm sure you've had years to hone in on the tongue-in-cheek. You could play Taylor Swift all Sunday during a bowling session.

You could sell red bowls for parties: "Whether your team wins or loses, you win with our big bowls."

What other phrases have YOU noticed in lieu of "Super Bowl"? REPLY back and let me know. I can't wait to hear them!!

Bits and Pieces

  • Girl Scout cookie season is upon us. And we already have a shortage. While my kid is a Girl Scout, this Venn illustration is perfect.
  • Remember what I told you about the Owala water bottle usurping the Stanley cups? Glamou's talking about them.
  • There is a lot of talk about DMARC/DKIM/SPF for email. Here is a brief breakdown. You should do this if you send newsletters or company emails.
  • Are you seeing the Nicki vs Megan debates and pew-pew? Here's what's going on in a nutshell - good read.

A few days ago, my Dell monitor gave me the green screen of death. It's still working on and off but I think it's time to look for a new monitor. This monitor is on for about 10-12 hours a day, every day.

I'd like to hear from you. What are you using for an external monitor? Do you like your monitor? How much did it cost? Is there one I should be looking at?

Send me all the monitors! (Or links.) Thank you!

Have a terrific week.

Chris

P.S. Don't miss my Google Calendar of Holidays. It's free and so easy to add to your gCal.

Hello Reader, So I'm watching a TikTok about a young person sharing how you may want to search for a job, if you're looking for a job. She's spelling out quotes and ANDs. This is what's called a Boolean search. (Pronounced "boo-lee-en.") This type of search is how you make your Google searches more helpful, too. Let's go back to LinkedIn because while you may be an entrepreneur, your network might not be. Plus you may want to consider this as you hire more staff or influencers or creators....

Hello Reader, Happy Greenwashing Month! I mean, Earth Month. Katie Robert of Trust Insights wrote an article about the 5 Ps of marketing. I think we should take it on for micro and small business owners. Think of them as your compass. In my personal life, I try to answer this question: "Does it serve me? Will it take away time from my family?" For business, you can ask these questions to kick off your marketing planning. Purpose Start with 'why.' (This is a Simon Sinek book, btw.) Why does...

Hi Reader, Today I had two small businesses reach out and ask me about their websites. I ran through a quick review for each and the same problems existed - even for these two radically different small businesses. Here are some common problems I see and why you should stop doing these: Auto-played videos - I see we are starting off with murder. Just stop. It's annoyed everyone in 1998, it still annoys everyone in 2024. It makes me (a potential customer) close the tab and move on to something...
